As many of you know we love to hear from our FUEL community. We get meal requests and ideas from you and we do our best to make them happen when ever we can. One of the most common requests we receive is to add Keto meals to our weekly healthy meal delivery in Korea. We are excited to announce that we have heard your requests and, starting next week on our February 7th delivery, we have added Keto options for many of our meals!
What is Keto?
You’ve probably heard the term “Keto” thrown around over the last few years. The Keto diet or Ketogenic diet is a low carb diet that typically reduces total carbohydrate intake to less than 50 grams a day. To put that in perspective that’s less than a bagel! I don’t know about you but I love a bagel in the morning, or afternoon… or anytime really!
Carbs or Carbohydrates are not a bad thing and eating carbs is not necessarily going to lead to weight gain, that’s actually caused by eating too many calories! Carbs are broken down by your body and converted into blood sugars that are your body’s main source of energy. We all need energy to get through the work day in Korea right?!
So why would we want to reduce carbs?
There are a number of benefits of the Keto diet with the most popular being weight loss, but this is not the only benefit. Other benefits include improving skin acne, reducing heart disease, diabetes, and improved brain health. Not all of the benefits are fully understood but research continues.
Personally I can say that living in Korea can be difficult when it comes to weight management and even my skin seems like it has more outbreaks. This probably has a lot to do with the desk job, plentiful fried food options and maekju ๋งฅ์ฃผ (beer) ๐
How does Keto or Ketosis work?
When you eat less carbs than your body needs in a day, you eventually run out of blood sugar to burn. This usually takes a few days. In order to produce energy your body will then start to break down fats and proteins instead of sugar, which can make you lose weight. This is called ketosis. During the first 3-6 months a Keto diet can lead to more weight loss than other diets because your body needs to work harder to break down fats and proteins for energy than those quick burning sugars.
In conclusion, Keto may not be a long term diet option for most people but taking periodic brakes from your usual routine, and using keto to bring your body back to baseline can be a great option for almost anyone.
